You owe it to yourself to create visions

visions

You may find it useful to have a vision of your life.

What is a vision? It is an expression of:

  • Your core beliefs
  • Your highest values
  • Your life’s purpose
  • Your highest aspirations
  • Your life’s mission
  • Your ideals
  • Your passions

You could have one overriding vision for your life, or you could have a vision for different areas such as:

  • Health
  • Finance
  • Family
  • Leisure
  • Education
  • Spiritual
  • Relationships
  • Career
  • Business

How do you go about creating your life visions?

Let’s take an example: you may have a vision about abundance in which you imagine yourself being well off. You then do a visualisation exercise in which you imagine yourself achieving this vision. This visualisation is done in the present, that is as, if it were actually happening now.

You could start by imagining your bank statement and how many noughts are at the end of the closing balance. Your visualisation does not stop there. You then imagine your lifestyle, how you dress, where you live, the type of car that you drive, the type of people you surround yourself with. Above all your visualisation is about a feeling. How will you feel when your vision has been realised?

Of course, at this stage, your vision is just an imaginary state which you aspire to. The next step is to plan how your vision can be achieved.

For this you need goals, projects and actions. These are the building blocks of your vision.

A goal is something that supports or helps bring about your vision. A goal that supports abundance could be becoming an entrepreneur and starting your own business to generate the wealth necessary for your abundant lifestyle.

A project could be something that means that your goal is achieved. So, if your goals is to have a successful company to generate the wealth for your abundance vision, then a project might be marketing a new product or service.

Each project requires several actions to complete. So sending out a press release for the new product is one action and placing an advert in a magazine is another action.

It helps to see this process as a pyramid. At the top is your vision. On the next level are a few goals, then projects, and finally actions. Generally, like a pyramid, you will find that each level has more items on it.

It is important to write down your vision in as much detail as possible. Find images from the internet or magazines that represent your vision. Paste your images to a board, or make a digital collage of them using a program such as Photoshop. This vision board will help focus your mind on your vision. Refer to it often to re-inspire you.

Spend some time creating your goals. Make sure that your goals are realistic and achievable. Don’t aim to become the next Bill Gates. The company that you start may not be as big as Microsoft. It may generate hundreds and thousands of dollars, not millions. Just how big a business do you need to generate enough income to be abundant?

Once you are clear about your goals you will probably find that the projects become clear, and the actions even clearer.

A vision without goals is rarely achievable.

This sample goal, abundance, is fairly straightforward. What about the other areas of your life? Here are some examples of visions and associated goals.

Vision: Be healthy and feel energetic.
Supporting Goals: Eat a healthy diet. Exercise every week. Have regular health check ups.
Supporting projects: Research diets and food suppliers. Join health club. Take out private medical insurance.

Vision: Be a compassionate person
Goals: Do regular voluntary work. Research religious ideas on compassion. Have regular outings with family.

Vision: Be a creative person
Supporting Goals: Learn to write, paint or compose music. Read the great novels. Travel to places of culture.
